US Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos held discussions with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih on conflict driven displacement and international efforts to resolve crises in Sudan, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Western Sahara.
The discussions focused on the growing number of people displaced by conflicts and the need for sustained diplomatic efforts to address the root causes of displacement.
On Sudan, Boulos and Salih discussed the massive scale of internal and external displacement caused by the ongoing conflict. They also stressed the importance of expanding the arms embargo to cover the entire country, saying broader restrictions could help alleviate the suffering of civilians and prevent further loss of life.
The two officials also discussed the situation in eastern DRC, including ongoing negotiations and US led efforts to facilitate the restoration of peace in the conflict affected region.
The humanitarian response to the Ebola crisis in eastern DRC was also reviewed during the discussions.
On Western Sahara, Boulos and Salih discussed continued efforts to reach a durable and mutually acceptable resolution consistent with UN Security Council Resolution 2797.
The US side said such a settlement could contribute to regional stability and shared prosperity, while also stressing the importance of finding lasting solutions for Sahrawi refugees living in the Tindouf camps.
The discussions reflect Washington’s continued engagement on conflicts and humanitarian crises that have displaced large populations, while seeking diplomatic pathways towards lasting peace and stability.
Boulos highlighted the meeting in a social media post, saying the talks with Salih focused on people displaced by conflict and efforts to resolve the crises affecting them.
