Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called for stronger African representation within the BRICS framework, greater access to finance and markets, and concrete measures to expand trade, investment and connectivity.
Addressing the BRICS Plus Session, which brought together BRICS member states and partner countries, Abiy highlighted the need for practical cooperation to advance Africa’s economic interests and strengthen the continent’s role in the global economy.
The Ethiopian Prime Minister said Ethiopia was ready to host an office of the New Development Bank (NDB) in Addis Ababa, a move that could help extend the multilateral lender’s reach and operations across Africa.
The proposal comes as BRICS continues to expand its engagement with developing countries and seeks to strengthen financial cooperation among nations of the Global South.

Abiy also highlighted the importance of climate action and sustainable development, saying Addis Ababa could play a significant role in advancing these priorities.
He said that with the full backing of BRICS, the upcoming COP32 climate summit in Addis Ababa could serve as an inclusive platform for advancing global climate action and sustainable development.
Ethiopia expressed its readiness to welcome BRICS members and partner countries to Addis Ababa for COP32, underscoring the country’s ambition to place African priorities at the centre of international discussions on climate and development.
The Ethiopian government said stronger cooperation within the BRICS Plus framework could help expand investment opportunities, improve connectivity and provide developing economies with greater access to finance and international markets.
