South Africa Targets Bigger, More Diverse Power Mix

South Africa is set to announce a major new electricity procurement programme covering wind, solar, battery storage and gas-to-power capacity through 2037….reports Africa Daily News Desk

South Africa’s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, is set to announce a new electricity procurement programme aimed at securing additional generation capacity and strengthening the country’s energy system through 2037.

Ramokgopa will announce a new Section 34 Determination on October 7 covering significant additional generation capacity over the 2026-2037 planning period.

The programme will feature a diversified energy mix, including wind and solar power, battery energy storage and gas-to-power technologies.

The Minister is also expected to outline a new multi-year procurement pipeline designed to give energy developers and investors greater long-term visibility and stability in the market.

The initiative is intended to provide a clearer framework for future electricity procurement while supporting the expansion of generation capacity needed to meet South Africa’s energy requirements.

As part of the announcement, Ramokgopa will introduce the State-led Power Parks Programme, which aims to lower barriers to entry for emerging energy developers and encourage broader ownership across the sector.

The programme will focus on strategically selected sites where new energy infrastructure can be developed alongside transmission capacity, battery storage and local economic development.

The Power Parks initiative is also intended to help ensure that new generation capacity can be effectively connected to and integrated into the national electricity grid.

The Government said the combination of new procurement plans and the Power Parks Programme would support a more diverse energy market while creating opportunities for emerging developers and promoting wider participation in the sector.

The announcement comes as South Africa continues to expand and diversify its electricity generation capacity, with renewable energy, storage and gas-to-power technologies forming part of the country’s longer-term energy planning.
