Ethiopia’s new Medemer government has unveiled an ambitious agenda focused on national unity, economic reform, stronger institutions and long-term national development….reports Africa Daily News Dec

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has unveiled the priorities of his newly formed Medemer government, calling for greater national unity, stronger institutions and continued economic and political reforms as the country seeks to build what he described as a “new Ethiopian civilization”.

In an address to the House of Peoples’ Representatives on October 5, Abiy thanked the 54 million citizens who, he said, had participated in the electoral process and described the election as an important test of Ethiopia’s democratic culture. 3f469df9-b756-4cf2-8343-16b802f…

The Prime Minister said the new government would be guided by the philosophy of “Medemer”, which he described as an Ethiopian concept centred on synergy, unity and the integration of differences for a common national purpose.

He said Ethiopia needed to learn from its past while adapting to a rapidly changing global political and economic environment. Abiy argued that the country’s future depended on developing systems suited to its own circumstances rather than simply adopting external models.

The government plans to continue macroeconomic reforms while adopting stricter budget oversight and monitoring. It also intends to promote productivity and develop a shared national narrative as part of efforts to strengthen Ethiopia as a multinational state. 3f469df9-b756-4cf2-8343-16b802f…

Abiy said the government would pursue a multi-sector economic strategy covering areas including manufacturing, agriculture, education, healthcare, energy, security and foreign relations.

He also highlighted the government’s digital development programme, pointing to progress in digital finance, digital markets, digital identification, artificial intelligence and digital platforms.

The Prime Minister said state-owned enterprises were being restructured through Ethiopian Investment Holdings and that some had moved from losses and debt towards generating revenue and profits. He also pointed to the restoration of heritage sites and developments including Unity Park and the National Palace as part of efforts to create additional national assets. 3f469df9-b756-4cf2-8343-16b802f…

The government also intends to continue urban development and agricultural initiatives. Abiy cited corridor development in Ethiopian cities and the Green Legacy initiative, under which he said 56 billion seedlings had been planted. He also highlighted dry-season wheat and rice production and initiatives aimed at increasing milk, poultry and egg production.

On political affairs, Abiy said constitutional amendments would be pursued based on recommendations from the national dialogue. He said the political system would seek to balance cooperation and competition and reiterated the government’s willingness to work with opposition parties, particularly those that participated in the election.

The government also plans to strengthen civil service delivery, address housing challenges and introduce more efficient approaches to government projects. It intends to assess public services based on their outcomes and impact rather than processes alone. 3f469df9-b756-4cf2-8343-16b802f…

Security and regional affairs will also feature prominently in the government’s agenda. Abiy said Ethiopia would maintain dialogue and pursue peace while strengthening security preparations and monitoring.

He said Ethiopia’s relations with neighbouring countries would be based on peace, mutual benefit and cooperation, while stressing that the country’s prosperity could not be fully realised without access to the sea.

The government plans to develop a modern defence force capable of operating across different theatres and responding to changing regional and global security conditions. Abiy also said Ethiopia would seek to strengthen its capacity in areas including air defence. 3f469df9-b756-4cf2-8343-16b802f…

The Prime Minister called on armed groups to choose peace and urged those with grievances to participate in nation-building. He also appealed to opposition parties to compete constructively and called on young Ethiopians to focus on education, skills and preparation for the country’s future.

Abiy said the new government’s broader objective was to create a resilient Ethiopia based on national unity, sovereignty and productivity.

He urged parliament to assess the government not only by its policies but by the extent to which its work improves the lives of citizens.

The Medemer government’s programme therefore combines continued economic and institutional reforms with a broader political vision centred on national unity, regional engagement and the development of an Ethiopian model of governance and growth. 3f469df9-b756-4cf2-8343-16b802f…
