Democratic Republic of the Congo Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner held talks with UN Special Representative James Swan in Kinshasa on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, focusing on the future of the UN peacekeeping mission MONUSCO and security developments in the country.

Kayikwamba Wagner received Swan, who is the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and head of MONUSCO, for discussions on the mission’s upcoming mandate.

The talks included consultations on the renewal of the MONUSCO mandate and recent developments concerning disarmament, demobilisation, repatriation, reintegration and resettlement (DDRRR) efforts.

The two officials also discussed the temporary redeployment of MONUSCO personnel to support the Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism Plus (MCVE+), according to the Congolese Foreign Ministry.

The meeting also addressed plans to convene the National Technical Secretariat responsible for implementing the MONUSCO mandate. The discussions were aimed at strengthening coordination between the Congolese authorities and the United Nations mission.

The meeting comes as the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the UN continue to coordinate on security and peacebuilding efforts, including the implementation of MONUSCO’s mandate and mechanisms aimed at addressing armed group activity and supporting stability in the country.
