India and Ghana have discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in the maritime and port sectors as part of efforts to deepen bilateral economic engagement and enhance collaboration in maritime safety.

India’s High Commissioner-designate to Ghana, Surinder Bhagat, paid a courtesy call on Major-General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, Acting Director General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), according to the High Commission of India in Accra.

The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on expanding cooperation in the maritime and port sectors, with a focus on strengthening the long-standing partnership between the two countries.

“India remains committed to further advancing its longstanding partnership with Ghana through stronger economic engagement and mutually beneficial cooperation,” the High Commission said in a post on X.

The meeting follows another high-level engagement last week, when Bhagat met Kamal-Deen Ali, Director General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, to discuss issues concerning the welfare, safety and well-being of Indian seafarers and crew members operating in Ghanaian waters.

According to the High Commission, the discussions centred on improving cooperation to ensure the safe and secure movement of Indian maritime personnel, addressing concerns affecting Indian seafarers, and enhancing coordination between the Indian mission and the Ghana Maritime Authority.

“The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of India and Ghana to promoting maritime safety, safeguarding the interests of seafarers, and further strengthening bilateral maritime cooperation,” the High Commission said.

Bhagat assumed charge as India’s High Commissioner-designate to Ghana last month. He was welcomed on arrival in Accra by V.N. Parameswaran, Second Secretary, along with members of the High Commission of India.

“High Commissioner-designate Shri Surinder Bhagat arrived in Accra, Ghana today and was accorded a warm welcome by Shri V.N. Parameswaran, Second Secretary and members of the High Commission of India team. We look forward to further strengthening the enduring friendship and partnership between India and Ghana under his leadership,” the mission said in an earlier post.

India and Ghana have maintained close and friendly ties for decades, underpinned by shared democratic values and longstanding diplomatic relations. India established its representative office in Accra in 1953, four years before Ghana gained independence, and formal diplomatic relations were established in 1957 following the country’s independence.

The recent engagements underscore both countries’ commitment to expanding cooperation in key sectors, including maritime security, port development and the welfare of seafarers, while reinforcing broader economic and strategic ties.
