African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf on Thursday chaired a high-level roundtable in Port Louis focused on reducing Africa’s risk premium and improving financing conditions for the continent.

The roundtable, titled “Beyond AfCRA: Improving the Africa Risk Premium – The De-risking Africa Initiative,”brought together African institutions and partners to discuss a broader and more coordinated approach to addressing the continent’s financing challenges.

Discussions focused on strengthening Africa’s financial architecture beyond the establishment of the Africa Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA), while examining the impact of the continent’s risk premium on the cost and availability of financing for African economies.

Experts at the meeting shared perspectives on measures to improve Africa’s financing conditions and address factors contributing to the higher risk premium attached to investments on the continent.

The meeting brought together representatives from key African institutions and partner organisations, including the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), ETIM, the UN Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (UNOSSA), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Afreximbank, the African Development Bank (AfDB), Open Society Foundations (OSF) and the African Association of Mutual Funds and Investments (AAMFI).

The discussions underscored the need for coordinated efforts to strengthen Africa’s financial architecture and reduce the financing constraints faced by African economies.
