The planned pipeline will connect Damerjog in Djibouti with Dewele in Ethiopia, with storage terminals at both ends….reports Africa Daily news Desk
Ethiopia, Djibouti and the Dangote Group have announced plans for a refined petroleum products pipeline linking Damerjog in Djibouti with Dewele in Ethiopia, as part of efforts to strengthen energy security and regional trade.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the project would be developed through a partnership between Ethiopian Investment Holdings and the Dangote Group, with storage terminals at both ends of the pipeline.
The project is expected to reduce logistics costs and delays while improving the efficiency and resilience of the Ethiopia Djibouti economic corridor, Abiy said in a post on X.
Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh and Dangote Group Chairman Aliko Dangote were also involved in the announcement.

The pipeline will connect Djibouti’s Damerjog energy infrastructure with Ethiopia’s border town of Dewele, creating a dedicated route for transporting refined petroleum products into Ethiopia. Djibouti authorities have previously highlighted Damerjog’s growing role as an energy and logistics hub serving Ethiopia and the wider region.
The planned project builds on Ethiopia’s efforts to expand fuel storage and improve the movement of petroleum products. Ethiopian Investment Holdings had earlier sought land at Damerjog Industrial Park for a fuel storage facility linked to the port and railway network.
The Damerjog Liquid Bulk Port has an oil jetty with an annual handling capacity of up to 25 million tonnes and infrastructure designed to handle products including diesel, aviation fuel, petrol and other petroleum products.
The new pipeline is expected to reduce reliance on road transport along the corridor and provide a more direct connection between Djibouti’s port facilities and Ethiopia’s fuel distribution network.
Abiy described the project as more than a pipeline, saying it represented an investment in future growth, regional integration and a more secure shared economic future, with African investment at its centre.
The announcement comes as Ethiopia and Djibouti continue to deepen economic cooperation, with the two countries seeking to expand infrastructure and trade links along the strategic corridor connecting Ethiopia to Djibouti’s ports.
