The Democratic Republic of the Congo has called for UN peacekeeping operations to adapt to realities on the ground and work more closely with host states….reports Africa Daily News Desk
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has called for a transformation of United Nations peacekeeping operations, urging missions to better adapt to conditions on the ground and work more closely with host countries.
The appeal was made during the 10,226th meeting of the UN Security Council, which focused on peacekeeping operations.
Speaking on behalf of the DRC, Nicolas Mupepe Matomene, Minister Counsellor and Deputy Political Coordinator at the DRC’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, said peacekeeping missions should be based on mandates supported by adequate resources and sustained partnerships with host states.
“Streamlining cannot become synonymous with giving up,” Matomene said, stressing that efforts to improve the efficiency of peacekeeping operations should not come at the expense of their responsibilities.
The DRC also called for stronger coordination between peacekeeping, peacebuilding, conflict prevention and mediation.
Kinshasa said peacekeeping operations should reflect the realities and needs of the countries where they are deployed, while maintaining close cooperation with national authorities.
The call comes amid broader discussions at the Security Council on the future of UN peacekeeping operations and how missions can respond more effectively to changing security conditions.
The DRC stressed that greater coordination across different areas of conflict management would help strengthen international efforts to prevent conflicts, support peace processes and sustain peace in countries emerging from violence.
The country reiterated the importance of ensuring that peacekeeping mandates are matched with sufficient resources and that host states remain active partners in the work of UN missions.
The DRC’s position places adaptation, adequate resources and closer cooperation with host governments at the centre of its call for reform of UN peacekeeping operations.
