Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani has been appointed as the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) new Deputy Chairperson, with his term set to run until November 2027.
Mukuhlani, who represents Zimbabwe on the ICC Board, will succeed Imran Khwaja following his departure from the position. The appointment makes Mukuhlani the first Zimbabwean to serve as Deputy Chair of the ICC.
Mukuhlani currently serves on the ICC Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) and Nominations Committees and chairs the HR and Remuneration Committee.
His appointment comes ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, which Zimbabwe will co-host with South Africa and Namibia. The tournament will mark the return of the men’s 50-over World Cup to Africa for the first time in 24 years.
Mukuhlani is expected to draw on his experience in cricket administration and his knowledge of African cricket as the ICC prepares for the tournament and works towards expanding the sport globally.

“I am deeply honoured by the confidence placed in me by my fellow ICC Board Directors and grateful for the opportunity to serve as Deputy Chair of the ICC,” Mukuhlani said.
“I look forward to working closely with our Chairman, Mr. Jay Shah, whose leadership, energy and ambition have brought a clear sense of purpose to the ICC, with a strong focus on growing cricket, creating opportunities for our Members and reaching new audiences and markets.”
He said cricket was entering an “exciting period”, particularly with its return to the Olympic Games and continued expansion into new markets.
“I look forward to supporting our Chairman, Mr. Jay Shah and fellow board directors in advancing our shared priorities and serving the best interests of cricket globally,” Mukuhlani added.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah congratulated Mukuhlani on his appointment and highlighted his experience in cricket administration and understanding of the international game.
“I warmly congratulate Tavengwa Mukuhlani on his election as Deputy Chair of the ICC. His experience in cricket administration, understanding of the global game and commitment to its development will be invaluable to the ICC Board,” Shah said.
Shah added that Mukuhlani had earned the confidence of his fellow ICC Board directors and said he looked forward to working with him to strengthen cricket across ICC Members and create further opportunities for the sport’s growth.
“Tavengwa has earned the confidence of his fellow Directors, and I look forward to working closely with him to strengthen cricket across our Members and create greater opportunities for the game to grow worldwide,” Shah said.
He also described Mukuhlani’s appointment as a significant milestone for Zimbabwe, noting that he was the first Zimbabwean to hold the Deputy Chair position.
“With cricket expanding globally and returning to the Olympic Games, strong leadership will be vital. I wish Tavengwa every success in his new role,” Shah added.
The appointment comes as international cricket prepares for its return to the Olympic programme and ahead of the 2027 World Cup, which will bring the sport’s premier 50-over tournament back to the African continent.
