Zambia is ramping up efforts to secure alternative fuel supplies as it seeks to reduce reliance on the Middle East amid ongoing regional conflicts, according to a report by Xinhua.

Ephraim Munshifwa, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Energy, said the move is aimed at cushioning the country against potential disruptions to petroleum supplies if geopolitical tensions persist. He added that authorities are closely monitoring global developments and will take necessary steps to safeguard energy security and protect consumers.

As part of the strategy, the government has begun rehabilitating three strategic fuel storage depots across different provinces, with a combined capacity of 20 million litres, alongside two existing facilities. Officials say targeted measures are also being introduced to limit the impact of potential price shocks.

Despite the concerns, Munshifwa said Zambia’s fuel supply remains stable, with sufficient stocks to meet current demand. Government data shows diesel reserves, including inland stocks and supplies in transit, stand at around 285 million litres, enough for 56 days, while petrol stocks total about 40 million litres, covering 23 days of national demand.
