The Ghanaian government has announced the resumption of the next phase of evacuating its citizens from South Africa following ongoing xenophobic attacks against migrants in the country.

In a statement, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the latest phase of the evacuation is expected to cover around 1,000 Ghanaians, who will be repatriated in groups. The first flights are scheduled to arrive in Accra on July 26 and July 27.

The ministry said the exercise will begin with Ghanaians who have already registered with the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria to return home voluntarily with government assistance.

Priority will be given to women, children, elderly people, individuals with medical conditions and students.

The government urged distressed Ghanaians in South Africa to contact the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria for assistance with travel arrangements and further enquiries.

The ministry also expressed appreciation to the Church of Pentecost in Pretoria and Johannesburg, as well as Global Kingdom Investment Pty. Ltd., for providing shelter free of charge to Ghanaian nationals who fled their homes while awaiting evacuation.

It said Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria has reactivated its emergency consular response and remains on alert to assist citizens wishing to return home safely.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry advised Ghanaians in South Africa to remain calm, avoid areas affected by unrest, ignore provocations and cooperate with officials to ensure the evacuation process proceeds smoothly.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that no Ghanaian is left behind in harm’s way.
