Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong has been shot dead in a highway robbery attack in the Ashanti Region, triggering a police manhunt and widespread shock across the country’s football community.
Frimpong, a player for Berekum Chelsea, was travelling with his team when armed robbers ambushed their bus along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District late on Sunday night, according to police.
The attackers, reportedly six in number and some carrying pump action guns, forced the driver to swerve off the road as the team attempted to escape. During the attack, Frimpong sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to Bibiani Government Hospital, where he later died.

Police said another passenger was robbed of cash, while spent cartridges recovered from the scene are being used as part of ongoing investigations. Additional personnel and crime scene experts have been deployed, with authorities assuring that efforts are underway to arrest the suspects.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s football fraternity, with the Ghana Football Association expressing “profound shock and deep sorrow” over the player’s death.
In a statement, the association described Frimpong as a promising young talent and extended condolences to his family, teammates and the entire Berekum Chelsea club. It also confirmed it is working closely with the Ghana Police Service as investigations continue.

The GFA further called for swift justice and said it would engage stakeholders to strengthen security measures for clubs travelling for domestic competitions.
Police have urged the public to remain calm as the manhunt continues, while tributes pour in for the fallen footballer whose death has highlighted growing concerns over highway security in parts of the country.
