Egypt’s Sisi, Trump’s advisor discuss Sudan war, Lebanon ceasefire efforts

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on Monday received Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to the US president for Arab and African affairs, in the presence of Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty, Head of the General Intelligence Service Hassan Rashad and Robert Silverman, Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Cairo, as well as other US officials. 

Presidential Spokesman Mohamed el Shennawy said that Boulos conveyed to President Sisi the greetings of US President Donald Trump. 

President Sisi asked his greetings to be conveyed in return, expressing his deep appreciation for the strategic cooperation between Egypt and the US, which is currently gaining momentum.

The spokesman added that the meeting addressed developments in Sudan, where both sides stressed the need to exert all possible efforts to end the war in the country and alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the Sudanese people. 

In this regard, President Sisi welcomed the international community’s pledge of €1.5 billion during the recent Berlin conference to respond to humanitarian needs in Sudan.

The president reiterated Egypt’s position on the Sudanese crisis, underlining the importance of preserving Sudan’s sovereignty and unity, while rejecting external interference and any attempts to undermine its security and stability or create a political vacuum. 

He also highlighted Egypt’s active engagement in the Quartet mechanism aimed at ending the conflict in Sudan and launching a political process leading to a sustainable peaceful settlement.

For his part, the US president’s advisor commended Egypt’s role in the Sudanese crisis and its endeavors to restore security and stability in the country, saying the US is committed to close coordination with Egypt and the Quartet countries in this regard.

The spokesman noted that the meeting also tackled updates in Lebanon, with President Sisi praising the efforts made by President Trump to reach a ceasefire there. 

The talks also covered a number of regional issues of mutual concern, with President Sisi welcoming the agreement between the Congolese government and the M23 movement to expand the enhanced joint regional mechanism for monitoring the recently signed ceasefire, while reaffirming Egypt’s support for the US efforts in this respect. 

President Sisi also highlighted Egypt’s moves to promote stability in the Horn of Africa and its firm rejection of any acts that could threaten security and stability in the region.

The spokesman noted that President Sisi explained Egypt’s water security is an existential issue and a top priority, saying the country will not compromise on its vital water interests. 

President Sisi and Boulos agreed on the need to de-escalate tensions and pursue political solutions to regional crises.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Boulos expressed President Trump’s appreciation for President Sisi’s prudent policies and for the efforts undertaken by him and state institutions to resolve regional conflicts, emphasizing the significance of maintaining coordination and consultation between the two countries.
