The Democratic Republic of Congo’s Leopards began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2 0 victory over Equatorial Guinea at Martyrs Stadium on Thursday.
President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo attended the opening qualifier as the Leopards secured three points in front of the home crowd.
DR Congo made a fast start, with captain Chancel Mbemba opening the scoring in the fourth minute. The early goal gave the hosts an advantage that they maintained through the remainder of the first half.
Yoane Wissa doubled DR Congo’s lead in the 72nd minute, putting the Leopards in a strong position as they closed out the match without conceding.
After the final whistle, Tshisekedi visited the teams’ dressing rooms. He praised the Equatorial Guinea players for their fair play and congratulated the Leopards on their victory.
The President also encouraged the team to maintain their level of performance as they continue their qualifying campaign.
The Leopards will now turn their attention to their next fixture, travelling to Harare, Zimbabwe, this weekend for the second matchday of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
The victory gives DR Congo an early boost as they seek to secure qualification for the continental tournament and build momentum in the opening stages of the campaign.
