Government orders nationwide inspections and immediate closure of venues failing safety standards after 12 people die…reports Africa Daily News Desk
The Democratic Republic of the Congo government has ordered an urgent nationwide safety inspection of event halls and other public venues following a deadly fire at a celebration hall in Kinshasa that killed 12 people and injured several others.
The blaze broke out overnight between Friday and Saturday at the Panacée events hall on Boulevard Triomphal, near the National Museum in the capital, the government said in an official statement.
According to a provisional toll released by city authorities, 12 people — seven women and five men — were killed in the fire. Five others remain in hospital, while 21 people who were initially treated have been discharged and placed under outpatient observation.
Authorities said efforts were continuing to identify victims whose bodies had not yet been formally identified.
The government expressed its condolences to the families of those killed and pledged support for survivors and relatives affected by the tragedy.
In response, the government, acting through the Vice Prime Minister and Interior Minister, ordered provincial governors to immediately begin systematic inspections of celebration halls and other venues used for public gatherings and leisure activities.
The Civil Protection Directorate and security services have been tasked with supporting the inspections, while authorities have ordered the immediate closure of any establishment found not to meet required safety standards.
For Kinshasa, officials have been given 15 days to submit a report on the implementation of the measures.
Investigations are also underway to establish the circumstances and cause of the fire and determine whether any individuals or organisations bear responsibility.
The government said medical care for those injured, victim identification and support for bereaved families would continue alongside the investigation.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the government said it would ensure strict enforcement of safety regulations at establishments and public spaces across the country and strengthen prevention and inspection mechanisms to prevent similar tragedies.
