England manager says his side must improve but praised their attitude after a goalless draw with Ghana left qualification hopes firmly in their own hands…reports London Daily News Desk
England manager Thomas Tuchel admitted there is room for improvement but insisted there was no cause for concern after the Three Lions were held to a goalless draw by Ghana in their second Group stage match of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
England dominated possession and created several opportunities but were unable to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Ghana side, who produced a resolute defensive display to earn a valuable point in Boston.
Despite the frustration of failing to score, Tuchel said he had anticipated a difficult contest and praised Ghana for their commitment and organisation.
“I saw it coming, I knew this could be a difficult game,” Tuchel said after the match.
“I have hardly seen a team defend so physically and committed like Ghana did, so full credit to them.”
The England boss acknowledged that breaking down Ghana’s defence required patience and precision while also ensuring his players remained alert to the threat of counter attacks.
“It was difficult to break them down. You need to be patient and precise and in the right moment, you need to be committed and be brave, but you can never for one second open space for counter attacks,” he said.
“We conceded, I think, only two and they were very dangerous so we were very aware of that.”

“We can do stuff better, but there’s no concern.”

Tuchel felt England gradually found their rhythm as the game progressed, particularly towards the end of each half, and believed fatigue eventually created more space for his players to exploit.
“I think at the end of the halves, we grew into it and found the rhythm and, of course, fatigue set in.
“We were pushing and pushing. I like the attitude. You need a bit of luck. We had enough shots, we had enough crosses, we had enough set pieces to score the first goal. We had a big chance with Harry.”
England captain Harry Kane missed a clear opportunity that would normally be expected to result in a goal, but Tuchel refused to criticise his leading striker.
“He had one chance that he never misses and he missed it today. This will not be the first match like this,” Tuchel said.
The German coach also highlighted the physical effort Ghana put into defending throughout the contest.
“They defended so intensely and with so much passion. They were so physical at that point, we knew it would open up the spaces a bit more.
“And then we had fresh legs. They are a bit more tired and you could see they were dangerous in the wide areas and we couldn’t get over the line.”
The draw leaves England needing a positive result against Panama in their final Group stage match in New Jersey on Saturday to secure progression to the knockout rounds.
Tuchel said the focus would now shift to recovery before preparing for another challenging encounter.
“We can do stuff better, but there’s no concern,” he said.
“I have some respect also for our group, even the third match against Panama, as they were very good against Ghana.
“Now it’s important to digest and analyse the match. We only have three days now in between.
“Tomorrow will be a recovery day and then two days to prepare, then back in the plane to travel. Of course, we play any match to win it.”
England will now return to their World Cup base in Kansas City before travelling to New Jersey, where Tuchel’s side will look to finish the group stage on a winning note and carry momentum into the knockout phase.
