The Ministry of Sports and Leisure and the Congolese Cycling Federation (FECOCY) confirmed in a joint statement issued on 20 October that Masaisai died on 18 September 2026.

Describing him as a courageous and determined athlete, the authorities said he had represented DR Congo during a cycling journey dedicated to raising awareness about peace and expressing solidarity with communities affected by violence in the country’s eastern regions.

His efforts sought to use sport as a platform to highlight the plight of people affected by violence and promote peace and unity. The ministry said his memory would be honoured through a posthumous decoration in recognition of his commitment to the country and sport.

A series of commemorative events has been announced in the capital, Kinshasa. A vigil is scheduled for Wednesday, 22 October, at the banquet hall of Tata Raphael Stadium.

Official ceremonies of remembrance and national tribute will follow on Thursday, 23 October, at the Hôpital du Cinquantenaire in Kinshasa.

The ministry and FECOCY have invited sporting organisations, young people, civil society groups and members of the public to attend the ceremonies and pay their final respects.
