The African Union Commission has expressed concern over heightened tensions between Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt, urging the three countries to exercise restraint and avoid actions or statements that could further escalate the situation.
In a statement, the Commission called on the three African Union member states to prioritise regional peace and stability and resolve their differences through diplomatic channels.
“The African Union Commission is closely following with concern the heightened tensions between Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt,” it said.
The Commission urged all three countries to refrain from measures or rhetoric that could worsen tensions and undermine peace and stability in the region.
It also stressed the importance of maintaining channels of communication between the countries and encouraged them to address their differences through established diplomatic mechanisms.
The AU Commission said dialogue should remain consistent with the principles of the Constitutive Act of the African Union, which provides a framework for peaceful cooperation and the resolution of disputes among member states.
The statement comes amid heightened regional tensions involving the three countries, with the AU seeking to encourage diplomatic engagement and prevent further escalation.
The Commission said it was ready to support efforts aimed at reducing tensions and facilitating dialogue.
“The AU Commission stands ready, in consultation with the countries concerned, to support efforts towards de-escalation, dialogue and the peaceful resolution of differences,” it said.
The African Union’s intervention highlights its call for peaceful engagement between Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt as tensions increase, while urging the countries to use diplomatic channels to address outstanding differences.
