The High Commission of India in Ghana, along with partner organisations and hundreds of volunteers, including members of the Indian community, participated in a large-scale beach clean-up drive at Ananse Beach in Nungua on Saturday.

The initiative saw volunteers remove tonnes of waste from the shoreline, helping transform the beach into a cleaner and greener public space. The High Commission said the drive highlighted the importance of community participation and shared responsibility in protecting the environment and oceans.

“A cleaner coast, a stronger community!” the High Commission said in a post on X, describing the clean-up as a joint effort involving partner entities and hundreds of volunteers.

The mission said the initiative complemented the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign 2026, an Indian government initiative aimed at encouraging citizen participation and ownership in efforts towards a cleaner and greener future.

The campaign’s activities in Ghana come as India and the West African country continue to expand cooperation across several areas, including parliamentary affairs, youth development, education and community engagement.

Earlier this week, India’s High Commissioner to Ghana, S. Bhagat, met Kwamena Minta Nyaku, Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North, and Alexander Akwasi Acquah, MP for Akim Oda. Discussions focused on bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including parliamentary affairs.

The High Commission said Nyaku and Acquah currently serve as Chairman and Vice Chairman, respectively, of the Ghana-India Parliamentary Friendship Association.

The Indian mission has also been engaging with Ghanaian organisations on youth empowerment and community development.

Last week, Bhagat met a delegation led by Hilary Y. Awusie, Chief Commissioner of the Ghana Scouts Association. Their discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in youth empowerment, leadership development, education, community service and cultural exchange.

The High Commission said such engagements would contribute to further strengthening the relationship between India and Ghana.

The beach clean-up in Nungua adds an environmental and community-focused dimension to the wider bilateral engagement, bringing together diplomatic representatives, local partners and members of the Indian community in a public initiative.

The participation of hundreds of volunteers also underscored the role of community-led action
