At least eight people have been killed and another injured in a suspected Boko Haram attack on Kangaleri village in Cameroon’s Far North region, according to local sources.

The attack took place at around 11pm local time on Friday in the Mayo-Sava division, when suspected Boko Haram fighters entered the village under cover of darkness before fleeing the area.

Six residents were reportedly killed at the scene, while three others were seriously wounded and taken to hospital for treatment. Two of those injured later died, leaving one person receiving medical care as of Saturday.

Authorities had not confirmed the precise circumstances of the attack, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The raid was followed by a separate incident the same night in Tourou, a town in the Mokolo district near Cameroon’s border with Nigeria.

Gunmen believed to be members of Boko Haram were reportedly seen in the town, where local sources said they looted shops and livestock and damaged a market on the outskirts.

No deaths were reported in the Tourou incident.

The latest attacks come amid continuing insecurity in Cameroon’s Far North region, which has faced repeated attacks linked to Boko Haram and other armed groups operating around the Lake Chad Basin.

The violence has resulted in repeated civilian casualties and damage to property, while security forces have continued operations against militants in the region.

In July, a woman was killed and four Cameroonian soldiers were injured during another suspected Boko Haram attack on an army outpost in the Far North.

That attack took place at Tourou village in the Mokolo subdivision of the Mayo-Tsanaga department on the night of July 13.

An infant was also shot and seriously injured during the raid, according to a security source cited by Xinhua.

The attackers reportedly seized military equipment before withdrawing from the area. The wounded soldiers and the infant were taken to a regional hospital for treatment.

The July attack came only hours after government troops had repelled another Boko Haram assault in the same area, according to the report. Two militants were killed and several others injured during that clash.

Boko Haram has carried out attacks in Cameroon’s Far North region since 2014, causing significant loss of life and material damage.

The group’s activities have also affected communities close to the Nigerian border, where militants have exploited the difficult-to-secure frontier and carried out raids on villages and military positions.

The latest violence in Kangaleri and Tourou underscores the continuing security challenges facing communities in the region.

Residents in affected areas remain vulnerable to attacks carried out at night, with armed groups using darkness to enter communities before withdrawing after looting or attacking residents.

The latest reported casualties bring renewed attention to the security situation in Cameroon’s Far North, where civilians have repeatedly been caught up in violence between armed groups and government forces.

While authorities have yet to provide an official account of the Kangaleri attack, local sources said the suspected militants had left the area following the raid.

Security officials are expected to continue monitoring the affected areas and assessing the circumstances surrounding the attacks as efforts to contain Boko Haram’s activities continue.

The Far North region remains one of Cameroon’s most affected areas in the long-running conflict, with repeated attacks continuing to pose a threat to civilians, security personnel and local businesses.
