A fire at the Dar Al-Aytam Orphanage in Algeria’s Mohammadia municipality has left 11 people dead and 19 others injured….reports Africa Daily News Desk

At least 11 people were killed and 19 others injured after a fire broke out at the Dar Al-Aytam Orphanage in the municipality of Mohammadia in Algeria’s El Harrach district during the early hours of Friday, according to the country’s Civil Protection authorities.

Civil Protection services said they received the alert at 3:32 a.m. and launched a large-scale emergency response to contain the blaze and rescue those inside the orphanage.

The operation involved the deployment of 10 fire engines, 16 ambulances, two ladder trucks and the GRIMP specialised rescue unit.

The Director General of Civil Protection, Colonel Boualem Boughlaf, travelled to the scene to oversee the firefighting operation and monitor the work of Civil Protection personnel and other emergency responders involved in the rescue effort.

Authorities said 11 people died in the incident.

Nineteen injured people were treated at the scene before being transported to a safe location for further medical care.

According to Civil Protection, the injured included 10 people who sustained burns of varying severity, two people suffering from respiratory distress caused by smoke inhalation, and seven people treated for shock.

Emergency responders also evacuated five people with special needs from the orphanage and transferred them to a safe location.

The cause of the fire has not yet been announced, and authorities have not released further details on the victims or the circumstances surrounding the incident.
