The Government of Uganda has mourned the death of His Majesty King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the Omukama of Tooro, paying tribute to a monarch whose reign was marked by youth empowerment, education, cultural unity and development.

In a condolence message, the government expressed its sympathies to the Royal Family and the people of the Tooro Kingdom following the passing of the revered traditional leader.

“The Government of Uganda mourns the passing of His Majesty King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, Omukama of Tooro. Our heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family and the people of Tooro,” the statement said.

King Oyo ascended to the throne on September 12, 1995, at the age of three, becoming the world’s youngest reigning monarch at the time.

Born in 1992, he succeeded to the throne at an extraordinarily young age and later assumed full operational control of the Tooro Kingdom on April 17, 2010, when he turned 18.

During his reign, King Oyo became closely associated with causes including youth empowerment, education, HIV/AIDS awareness, cultural promotion and unity, as well as advocacy for development.

His leadership represented a unique chapter in Uganda’s modern traditional monarchy, combining the preservation of the centuries-old Tooro Kingdom’s cultural heritage with efforts to engage younger generations and promote social development.

The Tooro Kingdom, one of Uganda’s historic traditional kingdoms, has played a significant role in preserving the cultural identity and traditions of its people.

Tributes are expected to pour in from across Uganda and beyond as the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and the country mourn the loss of a monarch whose life and reign spanned more than three decades.

King Oyo’s passing marks the end of an era for the Tooro Kingdom, where he rose from being the world’s youngest monarch to becoming a prominent symbol of cultural continuity, youth and service.
