African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf met Uganda’s Foreign Minister Adonia Ayebare on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, with regional peace and security and African led peace operations among the issues discussed.
Ayebare conveyed a message of goodwill from Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and commended Youssouf for his leadership of the African Union Commission.
Youssouf congratulated Ayebare on his appointment as Uganda’s foreign minister and highlighted his extensive diplomatic experience, including his previous engagement with the African Union and his service as Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
The AU Commission chairperson said Ayebare’s experience would contribute to advancing Uganda’s interests and strengthening effective multilateralism.

The two officials also exchanged views on the peace and security situation in the region.
Youssouf commended Uganda for its longstanding contribution to peacekeeping efforts, particularly in Somalia, as well as its wider role in promoting regional peace and stability.
The officials stressed the importance of securing sustainable and predictable financing for African led peace support operations.
The AU Commission chairperson also expressed appreciation to President Museveni for what he described as his continued contribution to regional integration and peace and security.
Ayebare reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to advancing the African Union’s mandate and strengthening Africa’s role in regional and global affairs.
The meeting took place during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, where African leaders and officials are holding discussions on regional security, multilateral cooperation and the continent’s role in global affairs.
The talks highlighted the continued focus by the African Union and its member states on strengthening African led approaches to peace and security, including through regional cooperation and sustainable support for peace operations.
