The United Arab Emirates has called on the UN Security Council to expand its arms embargo to cover all of Sudan, saying stronger measures are needed to stem the flow of weapons, protect civilians and help end the country’s ongoing civil war.

In a statement issued on September 12, the UAE said it took note of the Security Council’s decision to extend the Sudan sanctions regime for one month. It urged the Council to use the additional time to reach agreement on meaningful measures that reflect the realities of the conflict and contribute to ending it.

The UAE called for the arms embargo to apply across Sudan and to cover all warring parties as well as networks supplying them with weapons.

“Such a measure would help stem the flow of weapons to the belligerents, protect civilians, and support efforts to end the conflict,” the UAE said.

The Emirates also highlighted the severity of Sudan’s humanitarian crisis, describing it as one of the world’s most devastating.

It called for urgent international action to pressure the warring parties and affiliated militias to halt hostilities and ensure safe, rapid and unhindered humanitarian access to people in need.

The UAE said it would continue working closely with its Quad partners and support the efforts of the Quintet and other international and regional partners towards a political solution to the conflict.

The statement said the objective should be to bring an end to the civil war through diplomatic and political efforts rather than military action.

“The UAE reaffirms that there is no military solution to the conflict in Sudan,” it said, adding that the only viable path to lasting peace was an independent, civilian-led transition free from the influence of the warring parties and extremist groups.

The UAE’s statement comes as Sudan continues to face a devastating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, which has triggered a major humanitarian crisis and displaced millions of people.

The Emirates stressed that international efforts must focus on reducing the flow of weapons, protecting civilians and creating conditions for a political settlement.

It also urged international partners to continue supporting humanitarian access and efforts aimed at establishing a sustainable political process that can lead to lasting peace and civilian rule in Sudan.
