Ugandan football is in mourning after SC Villa captain David Owori died following a suspected robbery attack near his home in Kampala…reports Africa Daily News Desk
SC Villa captain David Owori has died after being attacked in a suspected robbery near his home in Kampala, prompting widespread grief across Uganda’s football community and renewed concern over violent crime in the country.
Police said Owori was fatally assaulted after resisting an attempt to steal his mobile phone and other belongings. The attack has fuelled public anger over rising insecurity and comes just weeks after Ugandan rugby international Sydney Gongodyo was killed in a separate fatal attack by a mob in Kampala.
Owori was attacked in the Makindye area on Monday evening before being rushed to Case Clinic in critical condition. Despite efforts by medical personnel to save him, he later died from his injuries.
In a statement, SC Villa condemned the killing and called on security agencies to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
“We call upon the relevant security and law enforcement agencies to urgently pursue, apprehend, and bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous crime,” the club said.

The club described Owori’s death as a devastating loss, saying Uganda had lost not only an accomplished footballer but also an exceptional leader and role model.
“This senseless act has robbed the Club and the country of a committed captain and a promising sportsman, and it must not go unanswered,” the statement added.
SC Villa paid tribute to Owori’s contribution both on and off the pitch, describing him as a respected leader whose professionalism, commitment and passion inspired teammates and supporters throughout his career.
“David was a valuable player, leader, and servant of the game whose loss is deeply felt by both the Club and the nation,” the club said.
The club also pledged to support Owori’s family during the difficult period ahead and ensure he receives a fitting farewell.
“The Club undertakes to stand with the family and to ensure that David is accorded a decent and dignified send-off,” the statement said.
As tributes continue to pour in from across Uganda’s sporting community, SC Villa has renewed its appeal for a thorough investigation and swift justice for those responsible.
Owori’s death has cast a shadow over Ugandan football and intensified calls for stronger action to tackle violent crime, with many drawing comparisons to the recent killing of rugby international Sydney Gongodyo. The deaths of two prominent athletes within weeks have sparked fresh debate over public safety and the protection of citizens from violent attacks.
