Condolences have poured in from across Africa following the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, with regional leaders and institutions expressing solidarity with the First Family and the people of Tanzania.

Kenyan leaders led the tributes, describing Hassan’s death as a profound loss for both his family and the nation.

In a message of condolence, Kenya said President Samia had lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father and Tanzania a distinguished son.

“Kenya stands with our Tanzanian brothers and sisters in this moment of grief,” the message said, offering prayers for strength and comfort for President Samia and her family.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) also extended its deepest condolences to the Tanzanian President, her family and the people of the country.

The continental health body said it stood alongside President Samia and Tanzanians during the period of mourning, praying for the peaceful repose of Hassan’s soul.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame said the government and people of Rwanda stood in solidarity with Tanzania as the country mourned and remembered Hassan’s life and legacy.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema also conveyed his condolences, saying Zambia stood “side by side” with Tanzania’s First Family and all citizens of the country during the difficult time.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expressed profound sympathy to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania.

In a message shared by the African Union, Youssouf offered prayers for the departed and wished the bereaved family strength, courage and solace.

Kenyan opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka said he received news of Hassan’s death with a “heavy heart”, describing it first and foremost as a deeply personal loss for President Samia and her family.

Musyoka said the close historical ties and shared destiny between Kenya and Tanzania meant neighbours across the border stood with the Tanzanian First Family in grief.

“Kenya and Tanzania remain bound by history and shared destiny, and it is as neighbours and kin that we hold you and your family in our thoughts at this difficult hour,” he said.

Tributes from across East and Southern Africa reflected the strong regional ties with Tanzania as leaders joined President Samia and her family in mourning.

Hassan’s death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, regional organisations and institutions, with messages focusing on solidarity with the Tanzanian President and prayers for comfort for her family.
