Reigning world champion Peres Jepchirchir has withdrawn from the 2026 London Marathon after being unable to fully recover from injury in time for the race.
Jepchirchir, who won the 2024 edition of the event, suffered a stress fracture following her run at the Valencia Marathon in December. The injury delayed the start of her training block for this year’s London Marathon.
The 32 year old only resumed training in late January and has now decided that she has not had sufficient time to prepare adequately for the race.
Announcing her withdrawal, Jepchirchir said it was a difficult decision but necessary given her condition. She explained that she had been unable to reach the level required to compete at the London Marathon due to the interruption to her training.
“It is with great sadness that I have withdrawn from the TCS London Marathon. After racing in Valencia, I was diagnosed with a stress fracture and I was only able to resume training in late January,” she said.
“I know that to be competitive at the TCS London Marathon you have to be at your top level and despite my best efforts, I’m just short of that due to my lack of training. I wish everyone racing the best of luck and look forward to returning to the TCS London Marathon in future years.”
