India’s Central Power Research Institute is eyeing a strategic expansion into African markets as it looks to strengthen its global footprint in electrical testing, certification and consultancy services.

Speaking to ANI, Ramdas, Engineering Officer in the Business Development Division at CPRI under the Ministry of Power, said the institute is focusing on Africa as a key growth region. He noted that plans are underway to offer testing and certification of electrical products, along with third party inspection, consultancy and specialised training programmes for manufacturers.

He added that CPRI is also exploring opportunities in other international markets, building on its existing global presence. The institute already serves a wide client base, with major overseas customers in the Middle East, including the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Kuwait, as well as in Asia, Europe and Australia.

Ramdas said short circuit testing and consultancy remain the institute’s primary offerings for international clients, though efforts are ongoing to expand the range of services.

To meet rising demand, CPRI is upgrading its infrastructure, including a major expansion of its Short Circuit Laboratory capacity from 2,500 MVA to 7,500 MVA, expected to be completed by the end of the year. He described this as a significant step to support both domestic and global requirements.

While acknowledging competition, Ramdas said CPRI continues to maintain a strong position, with facilities among the best globally. He added that the institute’s research and development efforts are aligned with its long term goals and remain on track.

All major capital investments are supported by the Government of India, he said, underscoring strong institutional backing for its expansion plans.

With new units coming up and a growing international focus, CPRI aims to further cement its role as a key player in the global power equipment testing and certification sector.
