Government forces recapture frontline barracks after hours of fierce fighting with rebels….reports Asian Lite News Desk
At least 14 Yemeni government soldiers have been killed and several others injured after Houthi fighters launched an assault on military positions in the Red Sea province of Hodeidah, according to military and medical officials.
The attack targeted two barracks of the 2nd Zaraniq Brigade on the Hays frontline in southern Hodeidah on Saturday, triggering hours of intense fighting between Houthi rebels and government troops.
A military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Houthis briefly captured the positions during the assault before government forces regrouped, mounted a counteroffensive and regained control of the barracks, forcing the attackers to retreat.
Medical officials said the death toll rose to 14 after more bodies of soldiers were recovered from the battlefield. Several injured personnel remain in hospital, with some reported to be in critical condition.
The latest violence comes amid an apparent escalation in Houthi military activity across territories under the group’s control. In recent days, the rebels have organised tribal gatherings, armed rallies and public demonstrations while renewing calls to end what they describe as the Saudi-led blockade on Yemen.
The fighting follows another deadly security incident last month, when an explosion ripped through a military camp operated by the pro-government Giants Brigades in the southern port city of Aden, killing 12 soldiers and injuring several others.
Yemen has remained engulfed in conflict since 2014, when the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, prompting a Saudi-led military coalition to intervene the following year in support of the internationally recognised government.
Although a UN-brokered ceasefire that took effect in April 2022 expired after six months, both sides have largely adhered to an informal truce, despite intermittent clashes continuing in several contested regions.
