Preparations are in high gear at the Port of Lamu ahead of the groundbreaking ceremony for the proposed Ksh2.2 trillion Dangote East Africa Refinery.
Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir, accompanied by Principal Secretary for the State Department for Transport Mohamed Daghar, inspected the port ahead of the ceremony, which will be presided over by President William Ruto.
Several heads of state are also expected to attend the event.
Despite the preparations, the Port of Lamu remains operational, with its heavy lift gang currently handling construction equipment for the project.
The port is discharging 2,930 metric tonnes of heavy construction machinery from the vessel MV Da Yang, according to the officials.
The refinery is planned to process crude oil from the Lokichar fields in Turkana County, as well as crude sourced from other parts of East and Southern Africa and beyond.
With a proposed processing capacity of 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day, the Dangote East Africa Refinery is expected to become one of the largest refining facilities in East Africa.
Once completed, the refinery is expected to supply refined petroleum products to markets across the region.
The project is also expected to strengthen East Africa’s petroleum infrastructure and reduce pressure on regional fuel supply networks by increasing local refining capacity.
The preparations at Lamu come as construction-related equipment continues to arrive at the port, highlighting the facility’s role in supporting the development of the major energy project.
