AU Commission chief calls for restraint and a return to constitutional order after deadly clashes in Niamey….reports Asian Lite News Desk
The African Union has condemned violence and any attempt to seize power by force following armed clashes and attacks on several sensitive sites in Niger’s capital, Niamey.
African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he had followed the situation with concern after serious events unfolded during the night of August 28-29, resulting in casualties and significant material damage.
Youssouf strongly condemned the use of violence and called on all parties to exercise restraint and safeguard the security of civilians and the stability of the country.
He extended condolences to the families of those killed and wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the violence.
The African Union chief reaffirmed the continental body’s commitment to supporting the people of Niger and promoting peace, stability and national cohesion.
He also said the African Union was ready to support efforts aimed at restoring constitutional order in Niger in line with the organisation’s relevant instruments.
Youssouf said he would continue to closely monitor developments in Niger and reiterated the African Union’s readiness to contribute to peace and stability efforts in the country and the wider Sahel region.
