Thousands of people across Africa took part in celebrations marking the 12th International Day of Yoga, reflecting the growing appeal of the ancient Indian practice and its role in promoting health, wellness and community engagement.

In Kenya, more than 2,500 participants gathered at the Oshwal Centre Grounds in Nairobi for one of the largest Yoga Day events in the region. Organised under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, the event brought together diplomats, Kenyan government officials, business leaders, members of the Indian diaspora and yoga enthusiasts from across the country.

The celebration was attended by the Under Secretary General and Director General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi as the chief guest.

According to the High Commission of India in Nairobi, the programme featured performances of Rhythmic Yoga and Stick Yoga before participants joined the Common Yoga Protocol session, showcasing yoga’s benefits for both physical fitness and mental well being.

Visitors also explored Ayurveda stalls set up at the venue, offering insights into India’s traditional system of medicine and its holistic approach to health.

The Indian mission noted that the strong turnout highlighted yoga’s growing popularity in Kenya and reflected the close ties between India and Kenya.

Similar scenes were witnessed in Tanzania, where more than 2,500 yoga enthusiasts gathered in Dar es Salaam for celebrations organised by the High Commission of India. The event was attended by Tanzania’s Deputy Minister of Minerals, Steven Kiruswa, along with ambassadors, high commissioners and representatives of international organisations.

In Ethiopia, the Embassy of India in Addis Ababa partnered with local yoga instructors to host a large scale celebration that attracted more than 300 participants. The event showcased yoga’s increasing reach among Ethiopian communities and wellness practitioners.

The celebrations coincided with a message from United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who described yoga as a universal practice that has transcended its ancient Indian origins.

In a post on X, Guterres said yoga helps millions of people around the world find calm, build strength and live with purpose. He added that yoga promotes mindfulness, respect and care for oneself, others and the planet.

Highlighting this year’s theme, he called for greater care and support for older generations, urging societies to create conditions that enable people of all ages to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.

The widespread participation across African nations underscored yoga’s expanding global footprint and its enduring appeal as a tool for physical health, mental balance and social harmony.
