Agaram’s journey is not just about education. It is about hope, empowerment, and building a brighter future, one student at a time writes Shelja Pallath
Education, as we all know, has the power to change lives. This is exactly what actor Suriya has been striving to do. He is working to transform the lives of people in Tamil Nadu through one powerful tool, education. His Agaram Foundation recently made headlines as it celebrated 15 successful years of transforming lives through learning. What began in 2006 by supporting just 160 students has now grown to impact more than 6,000 young learners across Tamil Nadu. Today, it stands as a life changing support system for many.
The foundation was launched on September 25, 2006, when Suriya was 35 years old. His dream was simple yet powerful, to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds access quality education. Over the years, that dream has evolved into a movement, strengthened by countless volunteers, donors, and most importantly, the students themselves. Many alumni who once received support from Agaram are now contributing to the foundation, becoming shining examples of giving back.
One of the foundation’s most remarkable achievements is the number of professionals it has nurtured. So far, 51 doctors have completed their education through Agaram, most of them hailing from remote rural parts of Tamil Nadu and from families with very limited means. Alongside them are 1,800 engineers, a significant majority of whom are young women, a powerful sign of changing times and rising opportunities for girls in the state.
Today, several reputed colleges reserve seats for students supported by Agaram, acknowledging the hard work, discipline, and determination these learners carry with them. While the foundation was initiated by one individual, it is now run by a large and dedicated team, continuing to grow stronger every year.
Agaram’s journey is not just about education. It is about hope, empowerment, and building a brighter future, one student at a time.
The foundation aims to support students from economically weaker sections, providing not only financial help but also guidance to help them succeed. One of its key initiatives is Vidhai, a mentorship program that connects students with experienced mentors who guide them through academic and personal challenges. Agaram carefully selects students who face serious hardships, including orphans, children without stable homes, and those living in extreme poverty, and helps them build a better life. Through support, mentorship, and care, Agaram opens the doors to opportunities for these deserving young minds.
Uplifting first generation learners is a major focus of the mission. The foundation empowers not only the young learners but also their parents, who never had access to proper education. Agaram bridges knowledge gaps through consistent mentorship and a well structured support system. It helps students deal with social pressure, lack of awareness, and academic insecurities.
For Agaram, education goes beyond textbooks. The foundation offers opportunities for communication skills development, career planning, digital literacy, and personality growth. Through a volunteer driven movement, individuals contribute their time and expertise by conducting workshops and mentoring students to engage in community activities.
Each success story stands as proof that talent exists everywhere. It simply needs to be nurtured. Agaram’s impactful efforts have already touched countless aspiring students. Today, it stands as one of Tamil Nadu’s most respected educational charities. May it continue its long term mission and unwavering effort to transform lives. For more information, visit:
